More!
A Sunday in August, Pinot Gris & Gewurztraminer, Okanagan Valley, BC As anyone who has ever worked in a natural wine bar knows, this is an essentially perfect orange wine which makes anyone who has ever tried a glass of it lose their damn mind in the style of a teenage girl at a Beatles concert. ASIA’s signature skin contact is a blend of predominantly Pinot Gris (90%) with a little splash of Gewurztraminer (10%) for a petite floral pop like a Liberty print pocket square in the front pocket of your perfectly-tailored coral three piece suit. Grapes are destemmed but undergo whole-berry carbonic maceration for five days, which gives us bangin’ & pronounced citrus flavours who aren’t here to mess around. This wine is bold and proud and bursting with energy, flamingo pink & endlessly Instagrammable, unfined & unfiltered with minimal sulphur. Your summer beach dream date: honeydew Sour Patch Kid (We know! It’s not a real thing! But it should be!), rosewater-infused Fresca, mandarin orange, jalapeno white tea. There’s a hint of natural wine scuzz like a pair of three month old white Converse All-Stars but nothing too crazy, mostly we’re looking at a fresh & jubilant sidekick which does indeed manage to conjure up the ultimate chill vibes of a Sunday in August but at heart transcends any prescriptive day of the week or month of the year—really, it’s perfect any time. Your obsession is justified: smash it year-round & scream for joy.
A Sunday in , Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot, Okanagan Valley, BC - Ah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot! The unofficial grapes of all of our parents, who can’t stop won’t stop ordering them without consulting the wine list first whenever we take them out for dinner. Well, hang on to your hats, Boomers— we take your Bordeaux blend, and we raise you this British Columbian hellcat. Merlot & Cab Sauv grapes undergo two weeks of semi-carbonic maceration before undergoing a 5 month élevage in neutral oak; this year’s Merlot-Cab Sauv has a little extra Merlot thrown in for good measure, making it extra crushable & ripe. This wine is a perfect bridge between the traditional and the contemporary— we’ve all tasted Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot a thousand times, and this wine pays homage to their classicism and timelessness with its razor-sharp expression of varietal character. Cab Sauv is as brawny and unsentimental as ever, an overstuffed leather armchair in a room called ‘the library’ with a stag’s head up on the wall, while Merlot does its usual A++ job of combatting Cab Sauv’s kind of mean vibe with its soft, plummy fruit and luscious texture. But ASIA’s reinterpretation of this classique blend is undeniably natty, volatile and meant to be drunk young; drinking it is sort of like looking at a picture of your parents in the seventies and wondering how these two hot badasses grew up to be the same nerds who constantly text you asking for iPad tech support, and will never, as long as they live, be able to wrap their heads around the concept of an emoji.
Our once a year release of beloved BC treasure A Sunday in August. Beautiful, natural and adventurous.
