Séléné, ‘Beaujolais Blanc’, 100% Chardonnay, Beaujolais France Beaujolais Blancs are not exactly a dime a dozen, but they’re such a cute little wine nerd niche. The Beaujolais region is located just south of fancypants Bourgogne, & white Beaujo— always made from 100% Chardonnay, just like in Bourgogne—drinks like Burgundy’s breezy younger sibling who takes a laissez-faire approach to all aspects of life (except for FUN, which they take extremely seriously.) Séléné winemaker Sylvère Trichard’s produces only a small amount of this highly coveted white, which is so freaking delicious that we do really want to hoard it all for ourselves, but won’t, because we love you. This is a savoury & textural Chard— all of Trichard’s wines are rooted in a distinctly punk rock spirit, but this Beaujolais Blanc’s innate rebelliousness is tempered by an intellectual, avant-garde backbone. Amply acidic, with an intriguing creamy note that reminds us of a hunk of sharp cheddar on a slice of cinnamony apple pie, which incidentally it would also pair very well with! Notes of beeswax, lemon curd & cool granite; this wine is effortless yet thought-provoking, like a casually-snapped candid photograph that turns out to be a work of genius.

Séléné, Rosé, 100% Gamay, Beaujolais, France This electric fruit punchy rosé is made using grapes from a plot within the Beaujolais-Villages appellation owned by head winemaker Sylvère Trichard as well as purchased fruit from another natural winemaker in Vaux-en-Beaujolais, whose plot happens to be outside of the formal Beaujolais appellation, hence its designation as a Vin de France (which is way more badass anyway). Light-bodied & crystalline on the palate, Séléné’s rosé is made using the direct press method, then fermented in fibreglass vats, unfined & unfiltered, with merely a sprinkle of sulphites to help stabilize this natty bb on its translatlantic journey from France to Canada. This rosé is a rabble-rousing little rebel, with dyed hot pink hair it cuts itself with safety scissors, the curator of heartbreaking, life-changing homemade mixtapes, a weirdly fast runner, all cherry chapstick, muddled basil & strawberry fruit roll-up. This is a rosé that somehow just tastes cold, it is so innately refreshing, nervy and intense. We truly cannot imagine a single situation that wouldn’t be enhanced by this presence of this delicious pink Gamay; it’s probably best to keep a bottle in your tote at all times, like, you never know…

SélénéCuvée de Printemps’ 100% Gamay, Beaujolais, FR After interning at Savoie’s famed Belluard and Beaujolais’s great Lapalu, ex-punk rocker Sylvère Trichard (infamous for sporting an iconic pair of overalls around the winery!) began his small winery with farmer and friend Elodie Bouvard in 2012. In Trichard’s tiny hometown of Blacé, they organically farm 4 hectares of grapes and vegetables harkening back to the mixed agriculture of the past. In the classic Beaujo style, Trichard uses carbonic maceration to ramp up the boisterousness of pure Gamay fruit; this is an energetic springtime red with the vicacity & power of a Ramones or Blondie banger. Skinny, scrappy & light on its feet, Cuvée de Printemps smacks of candied cherry & mincemeat (cozy stewed blackcurrant & baking spice) backed up by a whiff of fresh lil violets, a cutie bouquet for your sweetheart. Granitic mineral backbone, plush tannin & howling acidity, mad crushable & loves an indiscreet chill. Pairs weirdly perfectly with bougie mac & cheese, plastic glitter jewelry, vintage arcade games, & watching Clueless in bed.

PRODUCTION & DRINKING

Séléné is a wine project, but also an organic vegetable farm, harkening back to the mixed agriculture that was once the norm in Beaujolais. Started in 2012 by young vigneron Sylvère Trichard and farmer Elodie Bouvard, Séléné looks to connect with the land and produce something beautiful in the small town of Blace, Beaujolais where Sylvère grew up. Elodie oversees the organic vegetable farm on the property, while Sylvère organically farms 4 hectares of vines he took over from his uncle and also buys organic grapes from trusted neighbours that he turns into captivating wines of place.

Sylvère interned with Domaine Belluard (Savoie - extremely delicious) and worked at Domaine Lapalu (a Beaujolais master) before starting his own project. The wines go through semi-carbonic maceration, are aged in neutral vessels and are bottled with minimal or no SO2. Sylvère says, “the aim is to obtain wines that are more digestible, light and live, all to respect my environment, as well as the consumer. With this approach, I feel more artisan of the wine.”
