'Haute Côt(e) de Fruit', 100% Malbec, Cahors, France The wines of Fabien Jouves are like hella catchy two-and-a-half-minute pop songs that you can’t stop won’t stop listening to, & Fabien’s Haut Côt(e) de Fruit is his most crushable, versatile banger yet. The cuvée name is a playful double-entendre riffing on the grape name Côt, a regional nickname for Malbec as well as esteemed Bourgogne appellation Hautes-Côtes-de-Nuit— point being, chichi Burgundy this wine proudly isn’t! HCdF does NOT feel the need to apologise for living its cutie juicy boi truth. Vinified from 25-year-old Côt vines grown across a handful of plots based on clay and limestone soils, the grapes are then destemmed and macerated for seven days and aged for six months. The result is a brambly fruit salad of red cherry, mulberry & plum underscored by a dash of chalky minerality. Bright red licorice like Nibs at a movie theatre, soft vanilla kick, blackberry panna cotta. Perfectly medium-bodied, youthful & twinkly-eyed, with velour tracksuit tannins and tangy raspberry seed acidity. As the name makes exceedingly clear, this is a fruit-driven wine, but it doesn’t skimp on the lingering leather, spice & earthy notes that round it out and prevent it from drinking too cloying or jammy. Serve with a light chill at a caszh summer bash; this wine adores burgers & BBQ chicken & smoky grilled veg.
