GUT OGGAU MIXED 4 PACK
GUT OGGAU MIXED 4 PACK
We're delighted to receive our bi-annual Gut Oggau release with the return of many favourite family members! With a very small 2019 harvest & soaring cult status, our allocations are considerably smaller than past years. This is the mixed 4 pack with one bottle each of 2019 Theodora, 2019 Winifred, 2018 Josephine and the 2017 Joschuari. Very limited drop.
Gut Oggau, ‘Theodora’, White Field Blend, Burgenland, AUT
Theodora is the youngest member of the Gut Oggau fam (which is reflected in her wine being vinified from the youngest/most recently planted vineyard plot), mischievious and animated; with past vintages of Theodora we’ve imagined her as more of a chic & sophisticated city babe but this year she has evolved into bringing more of a dirty-haired nature girl energy to the table, which totally makes sense because, let’s face it, we’ve all really grown & progressed during covid— even, if not especially, Theodora. She’ll show you how to charge your crystals, but she’ll do it while wearing a sick a f Isabel Marant statement jacket.
This field blend (composed predominantly of Gruner Veltliner & Welschriesling) is well-structured, but softer, lower acid, and more textural than previous vintages, floral & playful, like braiding yourself a dandelion crown. Grapes are hand-harvested & destemmed, with fermentation taking place in used oak barrels for an elevage of about 9 months. Theodora is unfined & unfiltered, with zero sulfites, a fresh & breezy springtime daydream. Taking a big fat bite of Fuji apple, walking barefoot through the grass, stumbling upon an abandoned herb garden. Mineral character is expressed through a compelling wet clay note which makes us think that maybe Theodora is becoming a potter! You go, Theodora! We support you in everything you do.
Gut Oggau, ‘Winifred,’ Blaufrankisch & Zweigelt, Burgenland, AUT
Winifred is definitely the secretly and most effortlessly coolest member of the Gut Oggau fam. Theodora and her hot bro Atanasius are fancy & exhilirating & we love them for it, but Winifred is like a Cat Power/Patti Smith vibes tomboy poet who can repair a car engine with the same degree of natural ease as she can quote entire passages from Finnegan’s Wake. This vintage of Winifred rosé drinks like Winifred went home to crash with her dad Timotheus & stepmom Josephine during the pandemic, setting up shop in her childhood bedroom, which has wall-to-wall dusty rose carpeting and a hidden anarchy sign carved into a secret spot on her wooden bedframe.
This is a perfectly balanced rosé; most significantly, the Winifred vineyard is used only to make a rosé, so there is no saignée from a red wine. Fermentation takes place in used oak barrels; the wine goes through elevage in said barrels for about 8 months, with no batonnage. Winifred is then bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with zero addition of sulfur. Half savoury, salty & deep, like swimming through warm seawater, half energetic, healthy & fresh, like crushing half a bottle of Gatorade Frost after a legendarily transcendent run. Bright cranberry, pink apple, pairs with literally anything, the ultimate wine bar glass pour.
Gut Oggau, ‘Josephine’, Blaufrankisch & Roesler, Burgenland, AUT
Josephine is Timotheus’ second wife (little is known about Tim’s elusive first wife! We hope she makes a dramatic return in wine form at some point in the nearer-than-usual future!) & Winifred’s stepmom. She radiates big time coolest mom ever vibes, the kind of older woman you’re seated next to at a dinner party & she smells really good & all you want in the world is to be taken under her wing & then grow up to be her. Her namesake wine is dense & intense; classic Josephine to be half-vinified from an obscure & esoteric wine grape— Roesler is a cross between Blau & Zweigelt, known for its deep colour & abundant extract.
Josephine is a study in abundance, with low-key Port-adjacent raisination & a wild gnarly nose calling back to Jo’s tempestuous youth, which we’re sure was chock-a-block with sexy backpacking-related misadventures. Tastes more like a cherry than a cherry, full-bodied but perfectly balanced with zingy acidity that hits like a perfectly-timed joke. Grapes are hand harvested, destemmed, & fermented in oak, then aged in barrel for an additional eight months. Unfined, unfiltered, no sulfur. Pleasantly farmy mid-palate, steely minerality, spot on fruit to earthiness balance, a faded tattoo that has aged remarkably well, an exquisitely tailored oxblood leather blazer, mahogany nails & lipstick.
Gut Oggau, ‘Joschuari’, 100% Blaufrankisch, Burgenland
Joschuari is from the middle generation of the Gut Oggau legacy, son of Mechtid & Bertholdi, dad to Theodora & Atanasius. Let’s face it— Joschuari (do you think he goes by Josh for short???) straight up rules. He’s the kind of dude who seems so easy everywhere, he can hold his own in literally any situation, as comfortable at a soccer match as he is at a slightly sketchy art world after hours. Most thrillingly, he’s a super-educated diner who knows how to eat in a restaurant, always takes charge at the table, and tips like thirty percent. It is really hard not to fall in love with him—we definitely have.
The nose of this Joschuari vintage is so immediately banging & brazen, like being sucked into deep, connective eye contact. The palate is defined by a similarly vibrant note of hot deep fruit, juicy kirsch & black cherry, the kind of plum that makes you say, out loud, “Oh wow I forgot how good plums are” (they really are so good though! So underrated). Clovey milk chocolate ganache, slightly smokey but in a campfire way, not a cigarette way. Grapes are hand harvested, destemmed, & fermented in oak, where the juice spends about 3 weeks in contact with the skins. The wine goes through elevage in the same barrels for about 12 months, with no batonnage. The wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and with zero addition of sulfur. The end result is so wildly smooth, like eating a ruby. Such a hot wine to bring to a holiday dinner; Josh will be absolutely enthralled by the presence of stuffing. Moreish and likeable; a glass of house red wine in heaven.
They’re backkkkk! Our fave family members back just in time for Thanksgiving :)
